What is Smartphone Addiction?

Concept of the DayWhat is Smartphone Addiction?

Date:

Smartphones are the need of the current times. There cannot be a person in this present world who doesn’t have a smartphone. Very small Kids and too elderly people, of course, are not used to having the liberty of using smartphones as and when they need due to limitations in understanding the technology. But when it comes to teenagers, youngsters, middle-aged, and even to some extent senior citizens, we can never find them without smartphones.

Global smartphone revenue hits $450 billion in 2021

Because smartphones connect us with the rest of the world. So, even if your dad has a smartphone, it doesn’t mean he is addicted to it. He carries it to his office and even uses it at home to connect with the most important people in his personal and professional life. Because nowadays all sorts of online work can be done using smartphones. However, the usage of smartphones becomes an addiction when people use them beyond the time limitations.

Why is technology crucial to learning for children?

So, if you find a teenager using a smartphone from the time he wakes up in the morning till the time he goes back to sleep, it means he is really addicted to the device. This addiction is one of the reasons why he may be even scoring less in his exams, not having a good social circle, and not being willing to help his family in the household or daily chores. So, how do we get rid of this addiction comes the next question?

Well, smartphone addiction can be reduced by understanding why and for what purposes we need a smartphone. For example, a student may not require a smartphone for 14 hours a day even if he is not living with his parents. He or she has to allocate just 1 or 2 hours of their day’s time to chat with friends, research on the internet, connect with their relatives, play video games, watch OTT series, etc., and shut their mobiles off or keep them in vibration mode.

They need not be used while you are doing your daily chores or even studying for that matter (Even if you are advised to study online). It is because this kind of excess usage of smartphones when introduced in children or any person’s life becomes an addiction on its own. I will share with you an example of two students who meet each other in a cafe to discuss their future.

“Hi Rohan, how are you doing?” said Nishant when he meet him. Rohan says, “I am doing cool. How about you? How are you preparing for your exams?” was his next question. Nishant said, “Well, it is all slow. I really need those online classes to understand the concepts well.” As Nishant was talking to Rohan, he immediately gets a notification on social media that distracts him from his mobile. Rohan orders a coffee and snacks while he keeps seeing Nishant scrolling his feeds for the comments and likes. In the one hour of their meeting, Nishant hardly speaks up anything with Rohan as he is busy with his notifications and Instagram updates, thus making Rohan feel ignored.
