Hyderabad: Congress’s Member of Parliament from Wayanad in Kerala Rahul Gandhi who is in Telangana these days with his Bharat Jodo Yatra hoisted the national flag in front of Charminar on Tuesday, party sources said. The Congress leader said that he hoisted the national Tricolour in front of Charminar after 32 years. His father and then party president Rajiv Gandhi began his Sadbhavana Yatra from the same spot after unfurling the national flag.
Senior leaders of the party, including Digvijaya Singh, Jairam Ramesh and Telangana Congress president Revenath Reddy were also present on the occasion. When Rahul Gandhi reached Charminar, hundreds of people waiting for him at the spot raised Bharat Jodo slogans. The sky over the iconic Charminar was dotted with the national flags and the Congress Party banners.
Rahul Gandhi also paid floral tribute to Rajiv Gandhi’s photograph.
Ramesh said that the spot where Rahul Gandhi hoisted the Tricolour was the same place where Rajiv Gandhi had unfurled the national flag on October 19, 1990 and launched Sadbhavna Yatra. The Congress hoists the national flag on this day every year, but as the party could not do that on October 19, it did so on November 1 (Tuesday).
The people then resumed their Bharat Jodo march from Matha temple in Shamshabad and stopped at the Legacy Palace at Bahadurpura in Hyderabad for a break. The Bharat Yatris will have a night halt at the Gandhi Ideology Centre in Bowenpally only to begin their march at daybreak.
