Lucknow: President of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) Jayant Chaudhary has dashed off a letter to Speaker of Uttar Pradesh assembly Satish Mahana putting up a question mark on the reasons for disqualification of Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Mohd Azam Khan from the House, party sources said on Tuesday.

According to the letter, Chaudhary said that Khan was instantly disqualified after being awarded a three-year sentence by a court, but no action was taken against a law-maker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP Vikram Saini of Muzaffarnagar who was given a two-year sentence by MP/MLA court.

The letter said that if action was taken against Khan under the Representation of the People Act, the same thing should have been done against Saini. The law should not be used for people belonging to different political parties, Chaudhary said.

Khan has been disqualified from the House after a court’s three-year sentence in connection with hate speech. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has also raised the issue of Khan’s disqualification from the House. He said that the ruling party was harassing Khan, because he had been fighting against the communal forces and working to provide quality education to the youths of Rampur.
