What are Distorted beliefs about reality?

Concept of the DayWhat are Distorted beliefs about reality?

Date:

Low self-esteem and insecurity are a few of the reasons why people start developing distorted perceptions or beliefs about their real life. Psychotic disorders or episodes occur when a person goes through a very distorted perception or beliefs about reality. Such distortions about reality are often caused due to false beliefs, flawed thinking, confusion, disorganized thinking, several negative experiences in life, lack of memory power, and underlying mental health disorders.

For example, you may score well in language subjects but may terribly fail in technical subjects like Mathematics and accounts in your school academics. This will make you jump to the conclusion that you are not good for technical subjects and thus, you will never try to succeed in these subjects due to low scores.

Reality Behind 100 Crore Vaccinations

Another example can be your failure to develop a romantic relationship with your girlfriend at college will make you believe that you are not a good lover and hence, won’t have a good marital relationship with your partner. This distorted belief about reality will stop you from an outing with new friends who are girls and even you would leave the idea of dating in your life.

Some of the reasons you develop distorted beliefs about reality are because you overgeneralize your real-life situations, you immediately get to conclusions, you read others’ minds, you keep thinking about your fortune, you don’t accept what are the positives in your life, and you either get into all or nothing thinking, you magnify small situations and minimize bigger events that happen in your life, you try to attach emotions with every reason you give about things or persons in your life.

Thus, people who suffer from distorted beliefs about reality usually live in fear of others. This fear and insecurity affect them to lead a normal life. They don’t trust others and thus, don’t have meaningful and reliable friends or relatives in life. Their distorted beliefs of reality affect their thought process in such a way that they lead a lonely and isolated life. They want to be heard but they doubt others as soon as someone starts trying to help them or assist them in their chores.

For such people who have distorted beliefs about reality, everyone is cunning and the world is out to take something precious from them. Depending on the situation, their distorted beliefs make them take wrong decisions in their life. They don’t feel like helping others because the moment they help others, their brain makes them start having unrealistic expectations from others to help them.

And when they are not helped back as per their expectations, they start accusing or blaming such people, thus losing out relations with others. They don’t try to reason with others and neither step in their shoes to know what the reality or other people’s problems are in life. They live in their own small world with feelings of grandiosity and sometimes with low self-confidence, thus making them lead a depressed person’s life at the ultimate stage.

Thus, if you meet people with such distorted beliefs about reality, take them for counseling on a psychological or spiritual basis.
