Saharanpur (UP): A 26-year-old man set his 45-year-old mother-in-law afire in Janakpuri area of Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district, the police said on Saturday. The woman who suffered 90% burns died during treatment. Her daughter who tried to rescue the woman also sustained injuries. According to superintendent of police Abhimanyu Manglik, the culprit identified as Nitin is a resident of Shamli district of the state.
The wife of Nitin, 22-year-old Ritika, has been living with her parents for more than a fortnight. When Nitin came to take her back, she refused to go with him, said father of Ritika whose refusal to return to her husband’s house, enraged her husband so much so that he poured on Ritika and her mother
Enraged by her refusal, Nitin poured petrol on Ritika and his mother-in-law Payal and set them afire, he said. Nitin, too, sustained injuries in the incident. All three of them were rushed to a hospital where Payal died of burns. Ritika is in a critical condition, the police said, adding she tied the knot with Nitin at the beginning of this year.
