Basti (UP): An idol immersion led to a clash between the police and locals at Munderwa town in Basti district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday night, official sources said on Saturday. A girl sustained injuries in the incident after which the higher authorities suspended a sub-inspector. The residents of the town took out a procession to immerse the idols of Lakshmi and Ganesh in a nearby river. The police said since the residents had not taken permission for taking out such a procession, the cops asked them to stop it.
The police then beat up the driver of a tractor-trolley that was carrying a generator. The incident enraged those who took part in the procession. They attacked the police party. In the process, a girl was injured.
Superintendent of police Ashish Srivastava said sub-inspector Diwakar Yadav had been suspended and two constables Abhijit Singh and Amarnath Yadav sent to lines. He further said that he had asked a circle officer to probe the incident. To keep the situation under control, policemen from various places have been deployed in Munderwa town.
