NSA slapped against main culprit in Kanpur violence

Kanpur: The police have slapped the National Security Act (NSA) against the main accused in the Kanpur violence that broke out after suspended spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nupur Sharma’s remark on the Prophet.

According to sources, the violence broke out on June 3 and Hayat Zafar Hashmi was found to be the main culprit behind the stone-pelting incidents. The police also invoked the Gangsters Act against him.

The violence erupted in Pared, Nai Sadak and in Yateemkhana areas of Kanpur on  June 3 when some people asked the shopkeepers to put up their shutters in protest against Sharma’s statement in a TV debate. Forty people including 20 police personnel sustained injuries in the incident. According to Kanpur district magistrate Vishak G Ayyar, Kanpur commissioner of police Vijay Singh Meena forwarded a proposal for invoking the NSA against the main culprit in the violence on June 3. The government also approved the proposal. Hashmi, lodged in the Chitrakoot district jail, has been transferred to Kanpur prison where the notice related to slapping NSA will be served on him.
