Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has demoted a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) to the post of a constable for taking bribe to supress a rape case, official sources said on Wednesday. DSP Vidya Kishore Sharma has been demoted after the government came across a video clip in which he is seen taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.
When the incident took place last year, Sharma was DSP. He was shifted to another place after the case came to light. In a complaint, the woman alleged that the owner of Swami Vivekanand Hospital and inspector Ramveer Yadav had gang-raped her, but the police kept away from acting on her plaint.
According to the complaint, the police official took a bribe from the accused. After suspending the inspector, the state government asked the officials to register an FIR against Yadav. On the grounds of complaint of the woman, an inquiry was initiated against Sharma who was found guilty of taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. Before being demoted, Sharma had been suspended, official sources further said. It was an unprecedented move by the Chief Minister.
