Rampur (UP): More than 9,000 books were recovered from the library of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University run by a trust of Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Azam Khan, sources said on Tuesday. The books have been recovered after the information given by one of the two friends of SP legislator, Abdullah Azam.

Both his friends Salim and Anwar have already been arrested. The police also recovered a cleaning machine stolen from a government office. It was buried in a five-foot-deep pit.

The police further said that the books had been stolen from a madrasa in 2019.

According to additional superintendent of police Sansar Singh, the books taken out of the library of madrasa have been found in Jauhar University. As many as 9, 633 books had been stolen from the library in 2019 by breaking its wall. Azam Khan is one of the accused in connection with the theft. Salim and Anwar have been arrested after a video clip of gambling went viral on social media. Similarly, the cleaning machine of Rampur civic body found in the Jauhar University was worth crores of rupees, the police further said, adding that it had been bought during the rule of the SP.

A case has been registered against SP leader Azam Khan, his Abdullah Azam, former municipal head Azhar Khan, Sultan Mohammad Khan, Anwar Hussain, Salim and Talib on the grounds of a complaint lodged by Walker Ali Khan.
