Kumbh Mela got its name from the immortal – Pot of Nectar, which is mentioned in ancient scriptures called Puranas. Kumbh means Pot in the Sanskrit language. Mela means festival or event. The Kumbh Mela thus means Festival of the Pot. It is the celebration of the appearance of Pot. It is believed that the Kumbh Mela has been present since the days when demigods and demons produced the nectar of immortality together. It was said that they did the work to enjoy the nectar of immortality equally once it was produced after churning the milk ocean. It is also said that Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison that the milk ocean first produced when the churning process started. That’s why Lord Shiva is called Neelkanthan because he drank the poison without being unaffected.

In an attempt to save the nectar of immortality from the hands of the demons, the demigods hid the same in four places on the earth called Prayag i.e. Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik. Thus, these places are said to have mystical power as a drop of the immortal nectar got spilled from the pot while the demigods hid the same. When the demons became attracted by a Mohinimurti, the demigods drank the nectar and became immortal.
