Tech Desk – Finally, Apple MagSafe-like charging support will bring for Android smartphone which is called Qi2. This sounds like the next-gen version of the Qi wireless charging standard.
At CES 2023 event, the consortium announced it is working on Qi2 wireless tech.
For iPhone users, MagSafe has been a useful option for the last few years. But Android users have relied on myriad wireless chargers which are not quite useful.
The Qi2 charging will bring options for all smartphone users to increase wireless charging speed. It will also bring Magnetic Power Profile which leads manufacturers to develop magnetic-laced wireless chargers that use a specific point on the phone.
Moreover, Apple and Google have been conservative in their approach with wireless charging speeds of around 10W because of health and safety concerns.
Difference between MagSafe and Qi wireless charging
The main difference is Apple MagSafe and Qi is that the former is a proprietary solution. MagSafe uses precisely aligned magnets to attach the charger to the device, maximum speed of up to 15W. While Qi Wireless Charging is an open standard developed by the WPC and uses inductive charging to transfer energy on the device. It can offer 15W charging speeds but can offer output between 7.5W to 10W.
Also, it is not clarified which Android brands will adopt Qi2 tech.
