Lucknow. The political road of the Samajwadi Party (SP) looks bumpy in BJP’s second stint in Uttar Pradesh; especially in the UP Legislative Council. After losing three consecutive elections, even the post of Leader of Opposition (LOP) seems to get snatched from SP in the Legislative Council. At present, the SP has 17 members, out of which the term of twelve members will end by July 6. After that SP will be left with only 5 Legislative Council members. Let us tell you that at least 10 seats are necessary for the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council.
The total number of Legislative Council seats in UP is 100. The BJP’s tally in the Upper House has gone up to 68 after it won 33 seats in the recently concluded MLC elections. Independent candidates have won 2 seats and Raja Bhaiya’s Jansatta Loktantrik Dal has got one seat. BJP is in its golden period, it got the majority in Vidhan Parishad for the first time. In July, 13 seats will be vacant from the assembly quota, on which elections are to be held in June itself.

Numbers game-
Talking about the figures, the votes of 31 MLAs are necessary for a seat. In terms of numbers, the position of the SP alliance is to win only four seats with 125 MLAs. Accordingly, the number of members of the Samajwadi Party will become 9 in the house. But even if the Samajwadi Party will remain one seat away from the minimum 10 seats for the chair of the Leader of the Opposition, then in such a situation the condition of the SP can be the same as that of the Congress after the Lok Sabha elections.

After the death of the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ahmed Hassan and Thakur Jaiveer Singh winning the assembly elections, two seats have fallen vacant, on the basis of the strength of the MLAs in these seats, the BJP can easily win its candidates. Only one candidate of BSP will be left, Congress will be wiped out from the Upper House. Let us tell you that the term of Balwant Singh Ramuwalia, Wasim Barelvi, and Madhukar Jaitley is ending on 28th April. After this, the term of Rajpal Kashyap, Arvind Kumar and Sanjay Lather will also end on May 26, Lather is currently the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council. All these seats were nominated by the Governor, on which BJP members will be nominated this time.

After this, the tenure of SP’s Jagjivan Prasad, Kamlesh Kumar Pathak, Rannvijay Singh, Shatrudra Prakash, Balram Yadav and Ram Sundar Das Nishad will also end on July 6. Shatrudra Prakash has already joined the BJP before the assembly elections. After July 6, only five members of the Samajwadi Party, Rajendra Chaudhary, Naresh Uttam Patel, Ashutosh Sinha, Dr. Man Singh Yadav and Lal Bihari Yadav will be left in the Legislative Council. Now it will be seen whether Akhilesh Yadav will take the help of BSP, Rajaya Bhaiya or independents to get the chair of the opposition in Vidhan Parishad.
