MP quota in Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) admissions put on hold

EducationMP quota in Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) admissions put on hold

Date:

NewDelhi:  KVS Admission Quota, KV Admission 2022 Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has taken a big decision regarding admission to KV.  Admission to Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under “special provisions”, including the quota of Members of Parliament (MPs), has been put “on hold”, with immediate effect,  weeks after the Centre told Parliament that a decision on scrapping or retaining the quota would be taken after consultations with MPs.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education that runs these schools, communicated the decision to the principals of KVs across the country on April 12. “As per the directions of KVS headquarters, New Delhi, you are hereby informed that no admission should be done under special provisions till further orders,” it said in a circular sent to the school.

Under the special provision, MPs have discretionary power to recommend 10 children between classes 1 to 9 for admission in KVS.

As per the admission guidelines of KVS, not only MP quota, there are various categories under special provisions that allow admission to Central Government employees, KVS employees and children of MPs. Earlier, an MP was allowed to recommend two admissions in an academic year, which later increased to five in 2011. It again increased to six in 2012 and to 10 in 2016.

KVS earlier had a separate discretionary quota, but this was abolished by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Whoever was appointed as the Minister of Education was allowed to recommend 450 students for admission in each academic year. However, this was removed and the quota was abolished.

However, permission to the Members of Parliament from both the Houses of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to recommend enrollment of students in Kendriya Vidyalayas continues. KVS mainly provides admission in KV to central government employees. As per the rules, students whose parents are not central government employees can be admitted in Kendriya Vidyalaya only through MP quota and on the recommendations of the Education Minister.

Earlier, for the current educational session admission date was revised several times due to various reasons. Few parents have gone to High Courts for seeking age limit relaxations in Class 1 of KV admission.
