News Desk – Many people in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana felt the ground shake, causing panic and confusion. This happened because of an earthquake that occurred in the Godavari catchment area on 5 Dec morning at 7:27 AM. The center of the earthquake was in the Mulugu region. It had a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale and affected areas up to 300 kilometers away, including Hyderabad.
Dr. Shekhar, a principal scientist from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), explained that this kind of earthquake is common in river catchment areas like Godavari. He mentioned that smaller earthquakes might happen again but they will likely be less intense then this.
He recalled that the biggest earthquake in this area was a 5.7 magnitude in Bhadrachalam in 1969. Earthquakes below 6 on the Richter scale usually don’t cause major damage, so he advised that there is no immediate danger but recommended staying away from buildings that are old or have visible cracks for safety.
