News Desk – Sujata Saunik made history becomes Maharashtra’s first woman chief secretary. She took over the role in Mantralaya’s sixth-floor office, succeeding Nitin Kareer.
Saunik was in 1987 batch of IAS officers she will serve until her retirement in June of the following year.
Previously, Saunik was the additional chief secretary for the home and general administration departments. Her appointment was approved by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
This achievement broke a longstanding pattern where female candidates like Chandra Iyengar, Chitkala Zutshi, and Medha Gadgil were overlooked in favor of their junior male colleagues.
Saunik was in line for the chief secretary position as early as April 2023 but was passed over for her husband, Manoj Saunik, and later for Nitin Kareer.
Her chance came when Kareer’s term was nearing its end in March, but the appointment was delayed due to the Lok Sabha elections’ code of conduct and approval from the Election Commission of India.
Saunik’s husband, father, brother, two aunts, and uncle have all held significant bureaucratic roles. Her career began as an assistant collector in Aurangabad.
Her journey reflects not only her dedication but also marks a progressive step for Maharashtra in recognizing the capabilities and leadership of women.
