Bhopal: The people of Madhya Pradesh are set to pay more for consuming power, because the state government has decided to import coal to solve the electricity problems, sources in the power department said on Sunday. The Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (GENCO) has already invited tenders for importing 7.5 lakh metric tonnes of coal. Its cost will be Rs 976 crore, sources further said.

Once the proposed coal is imported, the cost of each unit will be Re 1; however, the state government has yet to say anything officially about the import of such a huge amount of coal. Besides, it did not make any comment on whether the import of coal would increase the cost of power tariff, but it simply said that there is scarcity of coal in the country.

A few engineers of the power department have urged the government to keep away from importing coal and follow the stand taken by the Uttar Pradesh government which has refused to import coal in people’s interest. Meanwhile, chairman of the All-India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) Shailendra Dubey at a meeting in Hyderabad demanded that there should be an independent probe into the coal shortage in the country. The meeting was held in Hyderabad.

Convener of Madhya Pradesh United Forum for Power Sector Employees and Engineers VKS Parihar said that AIEF had protested against the import of coal across the country and urged the Madhya Pradesh government to ban it.

Reacting to the state government’s decision to import coal, a Congress leader said that it would only increase power tariff and the common man, already facing hardships because of rising prices of essential commodities, will be in trouble.  He further said that the BJP government in the state as well as at the Centre has failed on all fronts and urged the ruling dispensations to ban coal imports to give relief to people.
