Giving importance to the rising awareness of environmental-friendliness among the citizens of Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has registered a 23 percent increase in the immersion of Ganesh idols in the artificial lakes.

As per the data released by BMC, 65,684 idols were immersed in 2023 after the one-and-a-half-day celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Out of these, 27,564 idols were immersed in artificial lakes.

Meanwhile, 4,418 Gauri idols have also been immersed. It is reported that immersions in artificial lakes have recorded the highest numbers this year. Last year, 22,410 idols were immersed in such artificial lakes.

So, what are artificial lakes? Well, basically they are made using inflatable tubes and are makeshift tanks filled with water. The BMC has been establishing and boosting devotees to benefit from this facility in an attempt to reduce water pollution.

As you would know many idols of Ganesha are made of Plaster of Paris (PoP), they do not liquefy when immersed in water, thus leading to pollution of natural water bodies and affecting aquatic life.

To solve the issue, the BMC established around 210 artificial lakes in Mumbai, compared to 154 that were set up last year. Moreover, the BMC also came up with a new facility on its chatbot platform that will allow citizens to situate their nearest artificial lake tank from their area.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic that made people stay back at home and celebrate festivities on a small scale, the prominence of artificial tanks came into the picture.

Meanwhile, a Ganesha pandal in Hyderabad was done in a creative manner as it replicated ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission. The idea was done by Agrasen Yuva Mandal who came up with the idea of the lunar mission, including the Vikram lander module and Pragyan rover.

Their Ganesha idol installation also gave best wishes to the Indian Cricket team for the forthcoming ICC World Cup.

Ganesh Visarjan can be done on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi after performing Ganesha Puja. The rituals for Visarjan include offering flowers, coconuts, and sweets to Lord Ganesha’s statue before they are taken to water bodies from the street procession with a lot of enthusiasm and fanfare.

Devotees sing praises of Lord Ganesha by chanting “Ganapati Bappa Morya” and “Ganesh Maharaj Ki, Jai” in the procession.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day festival that is celebrated to remove obstacles and start new beginnings in the lives of the devotees. Lord Ganesha is known as the God of wisdom and intelligence.
