InternationalZohran Mamdani Elected New York’s First Muslim Mayor

Date:

International Desk – In a surprising political shift, New Yorkers elected Zohran Mamdani, a left-wing Democratic leader, as their next Mayor on Tuesday (November 4, 2025). This makes him the first Muslim Mayor of New York City.

His victory was part of a strong night for Democrats, who also won two key Governor elections in Virginia and New Jersey sending a warning signal to President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Zohran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and several other strong rivals.

Democrats also won Governor races in Virginia (Abigail Spanberger) and New Jersey (Mikie Sherrill).

In California, voters approved a proposal to redraw electoral districts to reduce gerrymandering, a practice Trump had pushed in other states.

These victories boosted the morale of Democrats who have been facing constant pressure since Trump returned to the White House.

In his victory speech, Mamdani said:

“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light.”

Mamdani campaigned on promises that appealed directly to working-class New Yorkers, including:

Free bus travel in the city
More affordable childcare
City-run grocery stores to reduce living costs

His friendly style, strong social media presence, and door-to-door campaigning attracted huge support especially among young voters.

President Trump openly attacked Mamdani during the campaign, calling him a “Jew hater” on his social media platform. Conservative media and wealthy business figures also targeted him with negative campaigns.

Trump reacted to the election results by blaming:

The government shutdown

His name not being on the ballot

However, Democrats celebrated. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared on X:

“Democrats are smoking Donald Trump and Republican extremists throughout the country.”

Virginia and New Jersey are major political states winning both signals growing support for Democrats.

Former President Barack Obama also campaigned for the Democratic candidates and later said the wins show a “brighter future ahead.
