London: Indian-origin Rishi Sunak formally took over as the 57th Prime Minister of Britain on Tuesday after an interaction with King Charles III, sources said. Sunak, the first Indian-origin British Prime Minister, was elected new leader of the Conservative Party on Monday.
Outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss chaired her final cabinet meeting at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday before making her way to Buckingham Palace to tender her resignation to King Charles III. After Truss left the palace, Sunak arrived there to have an audience with the King who invited him to form the government. Sunak has become the second prime minister of the country in just six weeks and the third this year.
Sunak’s victory in the Tory leadership race came at the end of a dramatic few days in Westminster since Liz Truss quit on Thursday on the heels of a disastrous tax-cutting mini-budget and other policy U-turns.
A devout Hindu, the 42-year-old Sunak is the youngest British prime minister in 210 years. He is also the first Hindu Prime Minister of the country. In his first address as prime minister, Sunak said, “The UK is a great country, but there is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge.”
He said, “We now need stability and unity and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together; because that is the only way to overcome the challenges we face and build a better and more prosperous future for our children and our grandchildren.”
Meanwhile, Indian diaspora groups across the UK celebrated the occasion and said that it was a historic moment in British history. The Archbishop of Canterbury appealed to Britons to pray for Sunak when he entered No 10 Downing Street.
