Supreme Court Approves Delhi Metro to Cut Trees

The Delhi Metro’s request to remove 7,229 trees and transplant 5,545 trees for the building of three additional lines has been approved by a Supreme Court-appointed committee, stating that the projects strike a balance between possible human benefits and the need to conserve the environment. The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) dismissed claims made in a plea that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) should be barred from building because the corridors being built are mostly elevated, threatening thousands of trees.

The CEC stated that building underground stations is “2.5 times more expensive,” needs more land, and results in “significantly greater power usage.” It is also said that underground tunnels might jeopardise the structural integrity of current outer ring road flyovers and underpasses.

According to the report, 2,308 trees will be killed and 2,362 transplanted for the Janakpuri-RK Ashram Marg line; 4,766 trees will be felled and 2,195 transplanted for the Aerocity-Tughlaqabad line, and 988 trees will be felled and 1,643 transplanted for the Mukundpur-Maujpur line.

The CEC presented a combined report to the SC on August 26, proposing that all three routes be approved based on the DMRC’s project plan. According to the CEC’s assessment, “it is envisaged that not all of the trees scheduled for falling would be necessary to be felled at the time of project implementation.”

The CEC was established by the court in 2002 to oversee forest and wildlife issues. To compensate for the removal of 7,229 trees, 73,500 saplings are to be planted. The petition’s main point was that it is “essential that the nature of the Metro Rail Line construction be altered from overground to subterranean in order to ensure that the least amount of trees be destroyed in the city of Delhi.”
