Delhi Metro Introduces First Toilet for Transgenders

According to authorities, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has established separate bathrooms for transgender passengers travelling via the Delhi Metro, which were previously reserved solely for the differently-abled. The Delhi Metro has 347 such unique bathrooms designated to people with impairments throughout its network of stations, which will soon be available to the transgender community.

This is on top of the regular restrooms available to other guests. Apart from the separate bathrooms, officials added that any transgender person who uses a gender-based toilet could do so depending on their self-identified gender.

“It was decided that transgender people have a secure area and that discrimination against gender should be avoided. We have identified the current separate bathrooms for transgender people as a priority,” a DMRC spokeswoman stated. Bilingual signage named “Toilets for Persons with Disabilities and Transgender people” has been erected near these toilets.

“The DMRC also is investigating how to locate designated areas in its next phase IV stations to create a separate public bathroom,” stated the spokesperson. The Delhi Metro system has a total length of 390 kilometres and 285 stops (which includes other areas in the NCR including the Gurgaon Metro which goes by the name of Rapid Metro and the Uttar Pradesh connected Noida and Great Noida Metro).
