So, before the year of 2014, the total number of medical seats was around 82,500. In the last seven years, there has been an increase of roughly 80%, or 66,000 seats.

The new medical colleges are being developed as part of the ‘Establishing of New Medical Colleges Attached to Existing District/Referral Hospitals’ scheme, which is funded by the federal government. In districts where neither a government nor a private medical college exists, medical colleges are created under the scheme.

According to the datas presented by the Prime Minister’s Office, there’s a roughly 54% increase in the number of medical colleges. The total number of medical colleges, including public and private has increased from 387 to 596.
