What is Veganism?

Concept of the DayWhat is Veganism?

Date:

Veganism is basically following a vegan diet that does not involve animals, eggs, and dairy products. People these days are following vegan diets over non-vegetarian and even vegetarian diets for several health benefits. Today on 1st November, World Vegan Day is observed to make people aware of the health benefits of being a vegan. So, let us understand what is a vegan diet and how it is beneficial for a person to increase longevity and reduce illnesses.

In run up to World Environment Day, PETA India pitches for veganism

A vegan diet includes plant-based diets that are also nutritional by nature. Many people argue that veganism doesn’t give nutritional benefits to people because it excludes much stuff. However, that is not true. People nowadays are becoming more aware of how a vegan diet is actually beneficial not just for mankind but also for the environment. Vitamin D is also a part of a vegan diet and that one can get it by consuming spinach, mushrooms, Fortified tofu, and Fortified cereal, among others.

High-fibre rich diet can help fight antibiotic resistance

Apart from a vegan diet, veganism also promotes exposure to sunlight which is the best source of Vitamin D. When a person sits or walks in the morning sunlight between 7 am to 10 am, he or she gets the best sunlight exposure that keeps them away from several health issues and also promotes positive energy for the mind and body.

So, in a way, Veganism is not just about the vegan diet but also a way of living that excludes any form of exploitation of animals for food, clothing, or any other reason. It promotes animal-free alternatives that are useful not just for animals but also for humans and the environment as a whole. Some of the food items included in a vegan diet are fruits, vegetables, and legumes like beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, bread, rice, pasta, vegetable oils, and dairy alternatives such as coconut milk, almond milk, and soymilk, among others.

Vegans are categorized into four types such as ethical vegans, religious vegans, health vegans, and environmental vegans. A vegan diet can be healthy and also it involves high fiber and low cholesterol, thus promoting good health. It is also found that vegan diets have the potential to reduce the risk of developing heart disease and also avoiding premature death. People with type 2 diabetes and also those likely to get cancer due to family hereditary can cut down their risk of developing major health issues by following a vegan lifestyle and diet.

When non-vegetarian food eaters tease or mock those following veganism, it is obvious that they are jealous and lack awareness of what is wrong they are doing. If you are not following a vegan diet out of peer pressure, then it is better to cut down that social circle with unhealthy eating habits. You can probably reduce the discussions with such non-vegan friends and also do whatever you want in your life while you follow veganism. Veganism is a new trend that is keeping many people healthier than before and this trend will take its own due course time for others to follow.
