NationalIndia Changes Visa Rules: Foreigners Must Register Before 180-Day Stay Ends

Date:

The Central Government has changed immigration rules for foreigners staying in India for long periods. Under the revised rules, foreign nationals who want to stay in India beyond their permitted visa period will now have to register earlier than before.

The changes have been made under the Immigration and Foreigners Rules 2025, notified by the Union Home Ministry.

Earlier, eligible foreigners could complete their registration within 14 days after completing 180 days in India. Under the new rules, they must complete the registration process before the 180-day period ends.

The amendment applies to foreigners holding visas valid for 180 days or less and those who plan to extend their stay beyond the allowed period.

The new rules also affect foreigners holding long-term visas that allow multiple visits but limit each stay in India to 180 days. Such visitors must now register before crossing the 180-day limit if they wish to remain in the country longer.

The government has clarified that permission for extended stays will be granted only in emergency situations.

Another important change relates to children born in India to foreign nationals.

Earlier, parents had to inform immigration authorities within 30 days of the child’s birth through an online system to access visa-related services.

Under the revised rules, this requirement will not apply if one of the parents is an Indian citizen and wishes the child to retain Indian citizenship.

However, if the child later acquires the citizenship of another country while living in India, the parents must inform the registration officer within 30 days.

The government has also updated reporting and compliance requirements for hospitals, nursing homes, and medical institutions that provide accommodation to foreign nationals during treatment.

Officials said the changes are aimed at improving monitoring of foreign nationals staying in India and strengthening immigration management procedures.
