Moscow: The architect of the end Cold War era and last leader of the former Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev passed away at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow. According to news agencies, he was 91. Gorbachev was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the Cold War. He is considered one of the greatest leaders of the modern world who propagated Perestroika and Glasnost which opened the iron curtain that the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republic was covered with. The Cold War eventually ended in 1991.

Many films have been made on his life. Gorbachev who was the general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party took over as head of the state after the death of Konstantin Chernenko. Gorbachev also finalised arms reduction deals with the United States. Besides, he built partnerships with the Western powers. He was also one of the architects of reunification of Germany. He, however, could not keep the Soviet Union intact.
