Farmers protest: Internet suspended at Ghazipur border

New Delhi: Today is the 66th day of the peasant movement in protest against agricultural laws. But, after 2 times of violence in the last 4 days, the movement is taking a new turn. Along with the Singhu border, Ghazipur is now becoming a major center. At the same time, due to the continuous increase in the number of farmers, the restlessness of the administration has increased once again. The local administration has shut down the Internet service in areas around the Ghazipur border. Following the decision of the farmers to travel to Ghazipur in large numbers from western Uttar Pradesh, now both roads of NH 24 have been closed.

As the crowd started to swell at Ghazipur border (Delhi-UP) acting as a catalyst for the resumption of the farmers’ protest following the Republic Day violence that started to fade out the stir, the authorities suspended internet services at the protest site and its surrounding areas. Thousands of farmers have been camping at Ghazipur border which connects Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to protest against the Centre’s farm laws.

Internet services have been suspended as the crowd supporting the protesting farmers continued to swell at the Ghazipur border. Meanwhile, thousands of farmers from Muzaffarnagar are likely to march towards Ghazipur border to extend their support to the farmers.

Tens of thousands of farmers had gathered in Muzaffarnagar on Friday to participate in a kisan mahapanchayat in a massive outpouring of support for the Bharatiya Kisan Union-led protest against the Centre’s new farm laws in Ghazipur on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border. The kisan mahapanchayat resolved to throw its full weight behind the Ghazipur protest that has faced setbacks since the violence in Delhi on Republic Day.

The Haryana government had on Friday suspended internet services in 14 districts till 5 pm on January 30, taking the number of districts with internet shut down to 17. The order said the shutdown would be implemented with immediate effect.

The 14 districts are: Ambala, Yamuna Nagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Kaithal, Panipat, Hisar, Jind, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Fatehabad, Rewari and Sirsa. As per the order, only voice calls will be allowed in these areas.
