Are you unsure where you want to go in your career?

EducationAre you unsure where you want to go in your career?

Date:

Career confusion happens to anyone at any point in life. Career confusion occurs when you are at something but don’t know where and how to go ahead. I met a professional recently who said that he has completed 17 years of service in the field of HR but where he is working currently is in the education sector and the profile has been changed into public policy. His confusion was that he is at a delicate point in his career wherein he cannot go back to the HR industry and neither does he knows how to go ahead in the education sector.

A new twist in Daya’s political career!

His transition happened during the two years of the coronavirus pandemic lockdown when companies removed many of their senior employees just to ensure that they could sustain and recover the losses. With no choice as one cannot stay unemployed for a long time, this man got a new job in the education sector. He had a lot of clarity in his life but he was wondering whether he is doing the right thing by staying in his current job.

If you are someone like this professional who has had many years of experience but is currently stuck up about what to do, then here are some interesting tips.

1) Talk to your senior manager or boss:

Many times we think our boss is least interested in our career progress, so we don’t share with him our doubts or confusions related to our professional or personal progress in life. However, if you make genuine efforts to understand your boss’s perspectives, you will get a lot of information about how he has sustained the career setbacks that may have knocked on his door many times. You will also get a great deal of information about the profession and the trends happening in the industry.

2) Write a career journal:

Many times we tend to ignore the important achievements that we may have accomplished in our different jobs as we want to follow a standardized process of showing only the important job-related highlights in our CV. But that’s not how it works always, especially when you want clarity in your career. When I met a business graduate who was working in the marketing field for 5 years but had to quit her job due to work pressure, she showed me the various things or tasks that she had worked upon during the duration. This helped me to give her the directions that she can probably explore verbal communication further and become a public speaker, wherein she would be the one to decide her work targets and also have a stable income. Thus, your career journal or graph can give you insights on how to come out of career-related confusion.

3) Don’t be afraid to fail:

In case you are fearing that your current job or field will not give you anything good in your life, then do not think that way. Failures are okay but you should be proud that at least you tried to get some better clarity in your professional life.

Hope these tips help you to come out of the confusion and doubts that are stopping you to achieve your fullest potential in your career.
