Kanpur (UP): A woman and her son have been arrested to force a 26-year-old man into begging after blinding and maiming him, the police said on Thursday. The man Suresh Manjhi who was subjected to brutal torture was recently found lying on a road in a slum area of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district. He was then rushed to a hospital.

The woman identified as Asha and her son as Raj Nagar informed the police about the other members of the gang, including Vijay Nat whom Manjhi accused of blinding and maiming him. Nat sold him to Raj for Rs 70,000. The incident took place six months ago, when Manjhi was searching for a job. Nat, a resident of Macharia’s Gulabi building, kidnapped Manjhi from a place near the Jhakarkati bridge in Kanpur district and kept him hostage on the pretext of finding a job for him.

Nat, who blinded Manjhi by injecting him with some chemicals and maimed him by breaking his limbs, sold him to Raj Nagar, the kingpin of a gang at Nangoli in New Delhi for Rs 70,000. The gang forces people into begging.

According to deputy commissioner of police Pramod Kumar, both Raj and his mother Asha, who run the racket, have been arrested from the city.

A team from Kanpur will go to Nangoli to collect information about other people whom the gang has held hostage, he said.
