Uttar PradeshNew-born baby of HIV-positive dies, as medical staff refuse to touch her

Firozabad (UP): A 20-year-old HIV positive woman went into labour but the hospital staff declined to touch her. A boy born to her died after a few hours, official sources said. According to principal of the Firozabad Medical College Dr Sangeeta Aneja, she ordered a probe into the incident on the grounds of a complaint received from her family.

The father of the woman said that they had taken the woman to a private hospital which demanded Rs 20, 000 for normal delivery. He then consulted the district field officer of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and admitted his daughter to the medical college where she was lying on a stretcher writhing in pain for six hours but doctors did not come to help her, despite several requests.

When the issue reached the senior officials, a nurse took her to the labour room where she gave birth to a baby boy but he died in the morning because of breathing trouble.

According to NACO field officer Sarita Yadav, she had been in touch with the HIV-positive woman, and as her family could afford treatment at a private hospital, she called them to the medical college where neither any doctor nor any nurse touched her.

Yadav also said that she had informed the senior officials about the incident. Just after one year of her wedding, she got separated from her husband and was staying with her parents, sources said.
