Saharanpur (UP): Food stored in a toilet was served to the athletes at a kabaddi tournament in Saharanpur. When the incident came to light through a video clip that went viral on social media on September 16, the administration suspended the district sports officer, official sources said on Tuesday.
The video clip shows that the athletes, taking part in the sub-junior girls’ kabaddi tournament at the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar stadium, were being served rice and Poori kept in a toilet. More than 300 players from 16 divisions of the state took part in the tournament hosted from September 16 to 18. According to additional chief secretary (sports) Navneet Sehgal, Saharanpur district sports officer Animesh Saxena has been suspended for the lapse. The decision to suspend him was taken on Monday, Sehgal said.
According to reports, additional district magistrate (finance and revenue) Rajnish Kumar Mishra will conduct a probe into the incident and give a report in three days. Sources further said that the food was cooked on the premises of the swimming pool and only two cooks were engaged for 300 people who took part in the tournament.
The pooris were kept on a piece of paper and the rice left half-cooked, so the players did not get proper food, official sources further said.
