Shahjahanpur (UP): Fed up with harassment by moneylenders, couple committed suicide by hanging themselves in their house in Basant Vihar colony in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, the police said on Thursday. According to additional superintendent of police (city) Sanjay Kumar, the couple were identified as 432-year-old Satish Chandra and his 40-year-old wife Mansa Devi.
Chandra was found hanging from the fan, and wife was lying on the bed with a nose tied to her neck. A notice found near their bodies said that he had taken a loan of Rs 1 lakh from one person and Rs 1.50 lakh from another. In the suicide note, Chandra wrote that he had paid the money back, but the creditors were pressuring the couple to pay more. As a result, they committed, the suicide note said.
Kumar said that Chandra had first strangled his wife and committed suicide by hanging himself from the fan. The bodies have been sent for post mortem and the case is being investigated, the police said. A few months ago, a similar incident took place in Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh, where five members of a family, being fed up with the loan shirks, committed suicide.
