Allahabad (UP): The students of Allahabad University staging a sit-in against increase in fees for more than two months took out a “Jan Aakrosh March” on Tuesday demanding a rollback on the fees.
They also launched an agitation against the appointment of Sangeeta Srivastava as vice-chancellor of the university, a student leader Ajay Yadav Samrat said.
The students are on a relay hunger strike for more than two months, but the vice-chancellor has not listened to their problems. The university management seems to have become deaf, he said.
Yadav is taking part in the agitation against the fee hike. Hundreds of students gathered outside the students’ union building from where they took out the march, holding banners and posters and raising slogans. A large number of policemen were deployed during the march to maintain law and order, official sources said.
The students said that the fees for undergraduate courses, which were Rs 975 a year, have been raised to Rs 4, 151, which is more than 300%, which has become a burden for the parents. They further said that it happened at a time when the prices of essential commodities are going through the roof with each passing day.
