Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to intensify surveillance of VVIP inmates kept in the prisons of the state, official sources said on Thursday.

The government’s decision came in the wake of Aam Aadmi Party minister Satyendra Jain’s photographs emerging from the jail. Official sources said that there would be a round-the-clock video vigil in all 72 jails in UP where hardened criminals as well as VVIPS have been lodged.

Except for the items mentioned in the Jail Manual, the jail officials should allow anything inside the prisons, the official sources said.

According to sources in the jails department, the prison officials have been asked to maintain a list of politicians, bureaucrats, mafias, dreaded gangsters and terror suspects kept in the jails functioning under them.

Criminal activities in UP jails have been going on for a long time. The murder of jailed gangster Munna Bajrangi by another felonSunil Rathi in July 2018 and killing of three goons in a shootout in Chitrakoot jail in May last year show how such unlawful activities are going on in the jails.
