Tips to check out the local culture of your travel destination

TravelTips to check out the local culture of your travel destination

Date:

Fixing a travel destination comes with a cost, effort, and time as well. Like you cannot think of one fine day that you want to travel to Europe and immediately the next day you would be flying (unless and until you are filthy rich and own the airport). So, you need to plan a lot so that your time and money are not wasted unnecessarily as you decide to travel to your fixed location.

If you are planning to visit small villages or local regions, then apart from exploring the destination, you also need to understand what the local culture is all about. Local culture is unique to each region and it involves language, dressing sense, rituals, traditions, foods, products, and services that you may not find similar to other regions exactly. If you are planning to travel alone or with a group of people, here are some tips for you to check out the local culture.

Now share real-time location with friends on Snapchat

1) Always carry a notepad and a pen:

Well, you may own many smartphones and also have a TAB or LAPTOP with you. But all of these won’t come to you in handy if you plan to sit with a localite and try to understand what their culture is all about. I am taking this if you are planning to visit a small village in a big country like India. In case you are planning to visit a foreign location, then I am sure these tech devices are useful. Note down the answers that they try to give to you through their actions and directions (in case you are unable to grasp their local language).

2) Important primary research is far better than much secondary research:

You might have read about the local culture of a particular region on the internet websites, in magazines, in newspapers, and in books. However, they are not sufficient because what you get as a real-life experience goes a long way in understanding the local regions’ culture better than anyone else. After all, experiential learning always comes first over secondary data. So, in your conversations, just don’t fix one travel or local guide but also speak to some more important people of the local community to understand why things are in a particular way. If you plan to bring about a change in them, don’t go ahead immediately but wait for a while, understand why things work that way, and then suggest your changes.

3) Try living like a localite:

In order to understand why women wear a particular type of saree or attire and why men in the local region wear a pagadi or dhoti, you need to wear them as well. Then only you will know what are the advantages and disadvantages of the same. If your local region’s culture is more focused on living in a minimalist way then trying to be so till the time you are living there. This will help you to get a first-hand experience of something that you have never experienced before and also help you get a clear picture of the region. Seeing you wearing the local attire will also get you more friends to help you gather more information that you need.
