Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, stated on Sunday that her party will support a peaceful ‘Bharat Bandh’ planned by farmers in protest of the Centre’s three agricultural legislation. A Bharat Bandh has been called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha on September 27.
Mayawati remarked in a Hindi tweet, “The three agricultural laws rushed through by the Centre do not have the support of the country’s farmers, who are disappointed. They have been protesting across the country for the past ten months, and have been particularly violent in Delhi. They have issued a demand for a ‘Bharat Bandh,’ which the BSP endorses as a nonviolent demonstration.” According to her, the Centre should have appropriate talks with farmers before introducing a new law with their approval.

The BSP head added in another tweet, “The Centre has been asked to remove the three agricultural legislations once more, while demonstrating proper compassion and sensitivity to farmers. So that this situation may be remedied, the Centre should undertake appropriate consultations with farmers and introduce a new law with their approval. If the farmer is content and prosperous, the country will be content and affluent as well.”
To break the impasse and end the farmers’ protest, the government and farmer unions have undertaken 11 rounds of negotiations, the most recent on January 22. Following significant violence at a tractor rally by protesting farmers on January 26, talks have yet to begin.

Farmer organisations have claimed that these regulations would abolish the mandi and MSP procurement systems, leaving farmers at the whim of large corporations, despite the government dismissing these fears as unfounded and claiming that these measures will help farmers earn more money. The Supreme Court had halted the three laws’ execution until additional rulings were issued in January, appointing a panel to settle the deadlock.
