New Delhi: At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking the opposition parties to task for announcing freebies calling it “Rewri,” the Congress tore into the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for writing off loans worth Rs 10 lakh crore and termed it as “Gajak culture.” At a press conference on Friday, Congress’ spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh said that the government distributed free rations to 80 crore people during the corona pandemic under the Food Security Act 2013.
Besides, the Act passed by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2013 helped the BJP to buy foodgrains from farmers at the minimum support price (MSP). According to Vallabh, food grains were distributed among 80 citizens, nearly 60% of the population. Similarly, the banks have written off loans worth Rs 9.92 lakh crore (about 10 lakh crore) in the past five years, he said, adding that the government is silent on “Gajak culture.”

Vallabh said, “Of the Rs 9.92 lakh crore loan written off by the banks in the last five years, Rs 7.27 lakh crore is the share of public sector banks. In the reply given in Parliament, the government admitted that in the last five years, out of the amount written off by the public sector banks, only Rs 1.03 lakh crore was recovered.”
