New Delhi: Once the votes cast to elect the president of the Indian National Congress are counted on Wednesday, the party will get its first non-Gandhi chief after 24 years. Party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor are in the fray for the post of president, polling for which was held on Monday. The counting will begin at 10am on Wednesday at the headquarters of the All-India Congress Committee in New Delhi.

Ballot boxes brought from 68 polling booths across the country were brought to Delhi on Tuesday and kept in a strong room at the party headquarters. The ballot boxes will be opened in the presence of the candidates on Wednesday. According to chairman of the Central Election Authority Madhusudan Mistry, out of 9,915 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates that formed the electoral college to choose the party president, through a secret ballot system, 9,500 have cast their votes.

A Congress leader said that conducting such organisational polls showed that internal democracy in the party is very strong. It happened for the sixth time in the 137-year-old history of the party that there was a contest for the post of party president. There was a contest between the official candidate of the party P Sitaramayya and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in 1939, but Sitaramayya lost. The party held an election to the post of its president in 1950 for the first time after independence. Purshottam Das Tandon defeated Acharya Kripalani. After Dev Kant Barooah resigned as party president following the Congress’s defeat in the general elections, the party president’s election was held and K Brahmananda Reddy defeated Siddhartha Shankar Ray and Karan Singh and became the AICC chief. The next election was held in 1997 when Sitaram Kesri defeated Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot in a triangular contest. In an election held in 2000, Sonia Gandhi defeated Jitendra Prasada.
