New Delhi: Voting to elect the Congress president, which began at 10am, ended at 4pm on Monday and the results are likely to be announced on October 19, party sources said. Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor are in the fray. From ailing former prime minister Manmohan Singh to Sonia Gandhi, cast their votes to elect party president. Chairman of the Congress’s Central Election Authority (CEA) chairman Madhusudan Mistry said that he was satisfied with the election process and that elections were free, fair and transparent. Sixty-eight booths were set up at the party headquarters across the country, Mistry said, adding that there was a lot of enthusiasm about the party president’s election, and even the senior party leaders had queued up to cast their votes.

The ballot boxes will arrive by Tuesday evening and when the counting is over, he will declare the results on October 19, Mistry said.

Relations with Gandhi family beyond contention: Gehlot

“My relations with the Gandhi family are beyond any contention and logic and it will remain so even after October 19,” said Chief Minister of Rajasthan on Monday when the election to the post of Congress president was on. Gehlot who was at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi to cast his vote made the statement when he was asked to comment on Rajasthan politics which recently kicked up a storm.

The veteran Congress leader also said that Mallikarjun Kharge would reply to any question over Rajasthan politics only after winning the election the results of which will be declared on October 19.

Waiting for this day for a long time: Sonia

Congress’s interim president Sonia Gandhi said that she was eagerly waiting for this day (election to the post of party president). She made the statement after casting her vote at the party headquarters in New Delhi. Her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also cast her vote.
