News Desk – At least 40 people, including nine children, died in a stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday night. Over 120 people were injured, though most are said to be stable.
Health Minister Ma Subramanian said 36 people were already dead when brought to hospitals, and four more died later.
Tens of thousands had gathered in sweltering heat to see Vijay, one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest film stars, who is now preparing for the 2026 state elections. He arrived at the rally more than six hours late, by which time the crowd had grown uncontrollable.
Witnesses said many fainted during his speech, forcing ambulances to rush in. When Vijay’s vehicle started moving after the rally, fans chased it, triggering chaos and the deadly stampede.
The Tamil Nadu government has ordered an inquiry led by a retired judge. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced compensation of over ₹9 lakh (around $11,000) to each victim’s family.
Vijay, who retired from films in 2024 to launch his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, expressed deep sorrow. “My heart is shattered. I am in unbearable pain,” he wrote on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called the incident “deeply saddening.”
Stampedes are common in India during large gatherings. Earlier this year, 30 people died in a rush at the Maha Kumbh festival.
