News Desk – Delhi is facing an intense heatwave, and a red alert has been issued after the heat index – which shows how hot it feels with humidity – touched a worrying 51.9°C on Wednesday.
Actual temperatures across the city ranged between 40.9°C and 45.0°C. Ayanagar recorded the highest at 45°C, followed by Palam (44.5°C), Ridge (43.6°C), Pitampura (43.5°C), Lodi Road (43.4°C), Safdarjung (43.3°C), and Mayur Vihar (40.9°C).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the heat index depends on both temperature and humidity, and it changes throughout the day. It also mentioned that the heat index is not officially validated for India, so there are no confirmed records of it.
Heatwave conditions were seen in many areas of Delhi. While three weather stations reported heatwaves the previous day, only Ayanagar showed heatwave conditions on Wednesday.
Temperatures are expected to remain high till June 12, with some relief expected from June 13.
The IMD has issued a red alert, advising people to:
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid going out in the sun
- Limit outdoor work during afternoon hours
According to IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar, the heat is likely to continue until Thursday (June 12). However, a western disturbance is expected to arrive on June 13, which could bring light rain and thunderstorms to Delhi.
Humidity levels in Delhi ranged between 31% and 73%, with dry northwesterly winds adding to the discomfort.
The forecast for Thursday includes:
- Maximum temperature: 43–45°C
- Gusty winds (40–60 km/h)
- A chance of light rain or thunderstorms by evening or night
From June 13, the red alert may be downgraded to an orange alert as the heatwave intensity is expected to reduce.
Between June 14 and 17, Delhi may see a dip in temperatures to 37–42°C, with light to moderate rain and strong winds expected to bring some relief.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 245, which falls under the “poor” category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
AQI categories:
0–50: Good
51–100: Satisfactory
101–200: Moderate
201–300: Poor
301–400: Very Poor
401–500: Severe
