Red Alert Issued for Tamil Nadu Floods

Tamil Nadu has been issued a ‘red’ warning’ by the India Meteorological Department as the state prepares for severe rainfall. The warning is in effect for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. According to an IMD advisory, a low-pressure region has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and a well-marked low-pressure area (remnant of the depression) over the central Arabian Sea.

“A low pressure has formed over the same region at 8:30 under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and its environs. During the following 36 hours, it is expected to consolidate into a depression over southwest and adjacent to the southeast Bay of Bengal, travel west – north-westwards, and approach near the north Tamil Nadu coast by the early morning of November 11,” according to an IMD statement. It was highlighted that the existing active rain spell across Tamil Nadu would be extended till November 11 due to this development.

Localized road floods, inundation and waterlogging in low-lying regions, and the closing of underpasses, mostly in metropolitan areas, are possible outcomes. Visibility loss owing to heavy rain, traffic delays, the chance of damage to fragile structures, landslides, agricultural damage, and floods in some river catchments are all possibilities. The well-defined low-pressure system that remained over the central regions of the Arabian Sea at 8:30 a.m. IST Tuesday is expected to migrate west-south-westwards during the following three days.
