Kanteerava Stadium getting ready for the swearing-in ceremony on May 20
New Delhi/Bengaluru: The Congress has settled the issue of chief ministership in Karnataka. After the party got a thumping majority in the election, there were speculations about who will be the chief minister, because there were two strong claimants for the post.
The Congress Legislative Party held a meeting and left the decision to the court of party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
A high-level meeting was held and it continued till late Wednesday night and it was decided that Siddaramaiah will be the chief minister and KPCC president DK Shivkumar will be his deputy.
According to sources in the Congress, the party arrived at a consensus on government formation after four days of hectic parleys.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held in Bengaluru on May 20, sources further said.
Both Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar met Kharge after the decision on government formation had been taken.
Immediately after the announcement of Siddaramaiah’s name as the next chief minister, his supporters broke into celebrations in his native district Mysore on Thursday morning.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held in Bengaluru on May 20. The villagers burst firecrackers and distributed sweets. They also raised slogans.
According to sources, the assembly election was fought in the name of Siddaramaiah who even said that it would be his last election. Besides, in an internal survey conducted by the party, 43% of people wanted Siddaramaiah as the next chief minister. He also emerged as the most popular chief minister in the state.
Arrangements are being made at Kanteerava stadium for the swearing-in ceremony.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up around the stadium.
