Rijiju goes to the Ministry of Earth Sciences
New Delhi: Some changes have been made in the Union Cabinet nearly a year before the Lok Sabha elections.
President Droupadi Murmu, as advised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has reallocated the portfolios among minister, according to a brief statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Law Minister Kiren Rijiju was replaced with Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghawal. Rijiju was shifted to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, which Jitendra Singh was holding.
Meghawal is currently the Minister of state for Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of State for Culture.
Meghawal has been given independent charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice. Nevertheless, he will continue to keep the existing portfolios.
Rijiju, who frequently locked horns with the Supreme Court over judicial appointments, became the law minister on July 7, 2021.
At that time, Rijiju was the Minister of State Minority Affairs. He was given the law ministry after the resignation of the then Ravishankar Prasad.
In November last year, Rijiju opposed the collegium system of appointments in the apex court and in the high courts. He even said that it was “alien” to the Constitution.
Not only that, he even wrote a letter to the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud that government nominees should be included in the collegium.
