Amritsar: Assailants shot dead a Shiv Sena leader outside Gopal Mandir on Majitha road in Amritsar city of Punjab on Friday, the police said. The incident took place when the Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri was sitting on a dharna outside a temple. According to latest reports, the accused has been arrested and the weapon used in the crime has been confiscated.

The area is one of the busiest localities in Amritsar. The assailants pumped bullets into his body when Suri and some party workers were staging a sit-in outside the temple.

The police further said that the criminals fired more than five shots. Suri was rushed to a hospital where he died. Suri was on the hit list of many gangsters. Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma said that the law-and-order situation in the state has gone haywire.

Although Suri was provided police protection, the attackers somehow managed to come near the Sena leader and polished him off.

Suri and some other people were staging a dharna against the temple authorities after a few broken idols were found in the trash outside the shrine.

No sooner had the attacker pumped bullets into Suri, the crowd collared the killer and handed him over to the police. Suri had been arrested in July this year for using abusive language against some people.
