Indore (MP): The district administration has thwarted the attempt of a family to marry a 17-year-old girl in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh, official sources said on Friday.
When the officials came to know that a minor girl would be wedded to a 21-year-old man in Dhabli village of the district, they sent a team of women and child development department along with policemen to the spot. The team members warned the family members of the girl against marrying a minor girl and about the consequences they would have to face for it.
According to officials of the Women and Child Development Department, the girl was four months short of 18 years, which is the legal age for wedding of a girl. For marrying off a child, one has to face two years rigorous imprisonment of pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh or both under the provisions of the Child Marriage Act.
Despite this, reports of child marriage are received from different parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan every year. Occasionally, alert officials stop such marriages.
