MPCC chief Kamal Nath and BJP’s state unit head VD Sharma face off over anti-Sikh riots in 1984.

Bhopal: Political slugfest between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and its arch rival Congress has deepened in Madhya Pradesh because of the ensuing assembly election in the state.

When the BJP leaders are trying to bring back the 1984 anti-Sikh riots after the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Kamal Nath said a commission of inquiry set up by the BJP government had given him a carte blanche in connection with the riots.

At a press conference, in Anuppur, Nath said that there was no FIR against him and that there had not been a single charge against him during his 45-year-old political career.

The BJP has turned religion into a political propaganda, whereas for him, religion is personal issue and a matter of a conduct, Nath said.

Nath said he had constructed the biggest Hanuman temple of the state in his home district, Chhindwara, but he never did politics over it.

Nevertheless, president of the BJP’s state unit VD Sharma said that Nath had been involved in the anti-Sikh riots and he would be sent to jail for that.

Reacting to the statement, Nath said that Sharma should be aware of his misdeeds.

Sharma, however, challenged Nath to prove his statement. Nath also said that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had started remembering women and farmers after 18 years of rule, because election was near.

After the party’s victor in Karnataka, the Congress seems to have become highly enthusiastic about the ensuing assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

On June 12, party’s general secretary Priyanka Gandhi will address a rally at Jabalpur where a training for Sewa Dal members will also be held.
