New Delhi: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will have to count on the regional outfits like the Biju Janata Dal and the YSR Congress for passage of key bills through Rajya Sabha after the exit of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U). In the Upper House, the party has five members, including the Deputy Chairman Harivansh. As the JD (U) has exited from the NDA, he may have to resign.

He, however, may remain the deputy chairman of the House as happened earlier when Somnath Chatterjee stayed back as the Lok Sabha Speaker, although the CPIM expelled him from the party in 2008. In the Lok Sabha, the JD (U) has 16 members, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has an absolute majority in the House, so they face no problem in passing any bills. Although the BJP has only 91 members in the Rajya, so it takes the support of other parties. The BJP would require the support of 123 in the 245-member House.
