NationalGujarat HC issues notices state authorities on Morbi bridge collapse

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court took suo motu cognisance of the Morbi bridge collapse case on Monday and issued a notice to the state government officials of the home department, urban housing department, Morbi civic body and to the state Human Rights Commission, seeking a reply on the incident within a week.

A suo motu case pertains to that category when a court takes up a case on its own without any prior petition being filed.

The Morbi bridge, made of cable over the Machchu river, collapsed on October 30 killing 141 people. The bridge is a popular picnic spot for locals. More than 100 people sustained injuries in the incident. There were nearly 500 people on the bridge when the accident occurred.

The lawyers in Morbi district took out a march, refusing to fight the case for all nine accused arrested in connection with the incident. Two of the nine accused are the members of Oreva Group, an electrical appliance manufacturer, that operates in Gujarat. The bridge was reopened to the public on October 26, Gujarati New Year.

Four accused have been taken into police custody and five in judicial custody. Two of the four people in police custody are working as managers for Oreva company and two others are fabrication work contractors. The lawyers said they would not fight the case on behalf of the nine defendants.
