NationalGujarat HC holds civic body chief responsible for Morbi bridge collapse

Date:

Gandhinagar: Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Arvind Kumar has held Morbi civic body chief officer SV Zala responsible for the October 30 bridge collapse that led to the death of 135 people.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice AJ Shastri observed that chief officer of Morbi civic body SV Zala is prima facie guilty of dereliction of duty and even the affidavit filed by the municipal body lacks details.

The bench also sought a report on similar bridges in the state and their conditions within ten days and initiated suo motu public interest litigation in connection with the incident.

The court further said, “We are not satisfied with the compensation paid to the families of deceased, a family should get at least Rs 10 lakh compensation.”

The court was angry at seeing the castes mentioned against the names of some of the people who died in the incident. The Advocate General said that it had been done to provide help to the family members of those people under other government schemes. It helps the government identify such people, he said. The Chief Justice has also sought government files related to the matter and when the SIT report was submitted to the lower court. The case will be heard on December 12.
