Date:

The alleged mastermind of the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) paper leak, Bijendra Gupta, has been arrested in Bihar after evading police for several days.

Maharashtra Police arrested Gupta during a joint operation. Another accused was also taken into custody.

Arrest After Interstate Search

Police had been searching for Gupta across several parts of Bihar after he went into hiding.

A few days earlier, Maharashtra Police had arrested several people in the TET paper leak case, including Gupta’s wife. However, Gupta had managed to escape until now.

Linked to Multiple Paper Leak Cases

According to investigators, Gupta is suspected of being involved in several examination paper leak cases across the country.

He came into the spotlight in 2024 after an undercover investigation by India Today, in which he allegedly spoke about how paper leak networks operated and how competitive exams were compromised.

Investigators believe he played a major role in the Maharashtra TET paper leak case.

Police to Question Him Further

Maharashtra Police is expected to bring Gupta to the state on transit remand for further questioning.

Officials are also investigating whether he had links with other examination paper leak networks operating in different states.

Wife and Other Accused Already Arrested

Earlier, police arrested Gupta’s wife, Suman Gupta, from Bihar.

Investigators alleged that she was aware of the paper leak network and that several financial transactions linked to the racket took place in her presence.

Police are also investigating whether properties in Delhi and Patna were bought using money earned through the alleged paper leak operation.

More Arrests in the Case

On July 3, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested three more accused — Kapil Dahiya, Mithun Singh and Sonu Singh.

According to police:

  • Kapil Dahiya allegedly searched for buyers and sold leaked TET question papers.
  • Mithun Singh is accused of distributing the leaked papers.
  • Sonu Singh allegedly created fake identity documents for Gupta and helped run the network.

Police also recovered fake identity cards that were allegedly prepared for Gupta.

Investigation Started Before TET Exam

The investigation began after police arrested three suspects who were allegedly trying to sell leaked TET question papers in Thane before the June 28 examination.

Following the case, the Maharashtra State Council of Examination postponed the TET exam, affecting nearly six lakh candidates.

The SIT is continuing its investigation to identify everyone involved in the alleged paper leak network.
